Take me to Tallinn: My first time in Estonia!
I didn’t know what to expect when I was asked to fly to Estonia’s capital city for the first time. I’d heard that Tallinn was one of the tech startup giants of the world and I knew that it was somewhere in the Baltic region, but aside from that I really didn't know much about it. Always open to exploring new places, I learned a hand full of Estonian words and got ready for my trip!
I felt eyes on me as soon as I walked off the plane. Being an African man is definitely something that stands out there as there. Not unlike most of Eastern Europe, there aren’t too many people of color in the country as a whole. Throughout my stay I couldn’t help noticing the innocent stares of children and got a lot of odd celebrity like attention while out at the local bars and clubs. It was never in a negative way though; more like curiosity or intrigue.
Aside from sticking out like a soar thumb, I have to say that my experience was definitely a pleasant one. Everyone was really nice and there were lots of fun things to do. I also stayed near the heart of the old town, which is absolutely beautiful. Having been established in the early medieval era, Tallinns old town is one of the best preserved towns of that time in the world. However this wasn’t some boring historic landmark of a town either. With great food and a nightlife scene complete with swanky rooftop lounges and no shortage of beautiful people, there was certainly lots to keep you busy. The best of both worlds some would say. Tallinn may not have been at the top of my list of places to visit, but I’m glad I got the chance to see it and I would definitely go back again!
